Meeting the Director of the Ghana Sports Authority

Great spending the first morning of our week in Ghana with Yaw Ampofo Ankrah at the Accra Sports Stadium. He is the Director of the Ghana Sports Authority, which is the body that oversees the whole sporting apparatus in the country, and the welcome he extended set a tone I was not quite prepared for.
The conversation itself moved quickly onto the terrain that most interests me these days, which is why boxing sits in a policy category of its own for youth development in Ghana. Boxing gyms in Accra and Bukom already reach thousands of young people the state cannot easily reach, and Ghana is in the middle of a serious malnutrition crisis whose solutions the formal system is not delivering at scale. The question that runs through everything we do here is whether those two facts can be connected structurally rather than left to sit next to each other.
Spent the afternoon walking through Accra. Kwame Nkrumah's memorial park, the colonial architecture around Independence Arch, then Bukom itself, which is where every serious history of African boxing eventually ends up. I had read Emmanuel Akyeampong's essay on Bukom's precolonial martial traditions before flying out, and standing in the neighbourhood you can see quite clearly why he traced the sport's lineage back to Ga communal fighting rather than to British colonial influence.
