Big thank you to Rotunda ABC in Liverpool for opening their doors to us on Saturday, and to Fight Like a Girl CIC for building the day alongside us. To Natasha Jonas and Savannah Marshall especially, for coming in for the whole thing and setting the tone from the moment they walked in. And to Sarah Crews for delivering the education piece the way they always do.
Stronger Together was our day with Fight Like a Girl putting young women and girls at the heart of a boxing programme built around them. We ran a ninety-minute boxing session in the morning, a taster of the flagship education programme delivered by B-side of Boxing. Fight Like a Girl came in through the middle of the day with a trauma-informed self-defence session, and we closed on an open panel about representation and what boxing can mean for the next generation.
The Wirral Beacon covered the day and interviewed me alongside Jonas and Marshall, which was a good chance to make the case for why we ran it in the terms it deserved rather than in the softer language these things usually get talked about in. Girls aged 5 to 18 have been less active than boys for seven years running in the UK, which adds up to 280 million hours of lost activity every year, and they are more than three times as likely to lack confidence in a sporting environment. On the data, it is confidence rather than access that most often closes the door, which changes what a day like this is actually for.
